If you have been following SEO, GEO or AI search discussions, you may have started seeing a new file mentioned alongside robots.txt and sitemap.xml: llms.txt.

The idea is simple.

Websites are designed primarily for people. They contain navigation, menus, scripts, footers, calls to action and often hundreds or thousands of URLs. When an AI assistant or agent needs to understand a website, it has to work out which pages matter most.

An llms.txt file is intended to make that easier.

It gives AI systems a concise, structured overview of a website and points them towards the content you consider most useful or authoritative.

The proposal was introduced in 2024 and has gained attention as more website owners think about how their content is discovered and interpreted by AI systems.

So, should you create one?

For many websites, it is worth considering. But it is important to understand what llms.txt does, and what it does not do.

What is llms.txt?

llms.txt is a Markdown formatted file that can be published at:

https://yourwebsite.com/llms.txt

Its purpose is to provide AI systems with a curated map of your website.

Instead of expecting an AI system to navigate your entire site to understand your business, you can give it a short document explaining:

  • what your website or company does

  • which pages contain your most important information

  • where documentation, products or guides can be found

  • which resources provide additional context

Think of it as a table of contents for AI systems.

It is not intended to list every page on your website.

The goal is curation, not duplication.

llms.txt vs robots.txt

One of the most common questions is how llms.txt differs from robots.txt.

Although both files can sit at the root of a website, they serve very different purposes.

robots.txt controls crawling

A robots.txt file tells automated crawlers which parts of your website they are allowed to access.

For example:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /admin/

It is primarily a crawler control file.

llms.txt provides context

An llms.txt file does not control access.

Instead, it helps an AI system understand what your website is about and which resources it should prioritise.

A simple way to think about the difference is:

File Main purpose
robots.txt Controls crawler access
sitemap.xml Helps systems discover URLs
llms.txt Highlights useful context for AI systems

Adding a page to llms.txt does not automatically give an AI crawler permission to access it.

Likewise, leaving a page out of the file does not stop AI systems from discovering it elsewhere.

Why is llms.txt gaining attention?

More web content is now being accessed by software acting on behalf of users.

AI assistants answer questions using web content. Coding agents read documentation. Research tools collect information from multiple websites.

That creates a new question for website owners:

How do you make your most important information easy for AI systems to find and understand?

llms.txt is one proposed solution.

It provides a simple way to point machines towards high value content without requiring them to work through every page on a website.

The format is also beginning to appear in CMS tools, documentation platforms and SEO products.

However, adoption does not mean universal support.

Not every AI platform currently uses llms.txt, so it should be treated as an emerging convention rather than a guaranteed visibility tool.

Does llms.txt improve SEO or AI visibility?

There is currently no strong evidence that publishing an llms.txt file directly improves rankings or guarantees inclusion in AI generated answers.

It should not replace:

  • technical SEO

  • crawlable pages

  • useful original content

  • clear site architecture

  • structured data

  • accurate product information

  • well maintained documentation

Instead, it is better viewed as low cost AI readiness infrastructure.

If more AI systems begin supporting the format, your site is already prepared.

If adoption remains limited, the cost of creating the file is relatively small.

What should an llms.txt file contain?

The format is intentionally straightforward.

A useful file might contain:

  1. The name of your website or project.

  2. A short description of what it does.

  3. Important context about your business or content.

  4. Sections grouping your key resources.

  5. Links with short descriptions explaining what each page contains.

The key is to be selective.

You do not need to include every URL on your site.

Instead, focus on the pages you would want an AI assistant to read first.

Example llms.txt file

Imagine you run a fictional analytics company called Acme Analytics.

Your file could look like this:

Acme Analytics

Acme Analytics is a web analytics platform for SaaS companies. It helps product and marketing teams understand acquisition, user behaviour and conversion.

Product

Documentation

Resources

Notice that the file does not try to replicate the sitemap.

It simply highlights the most useful sources.

How to create an llms.txt file

Creating one is relatively simple.

1. Choose your most important pages

Start with the pages that best explain your company, products and expertise.

For a SaaS business, this might include product pages, pricing, documentation, security information and key educational content.

2. Write a clear description

Explain what your business does in plain language.

Avoid vague marketing statements.

Instead of:

“We empower businesses through innovative digital solutions.”

Use something specific:

“We provide accounting software for UK freelancers and small businesses.”

Clarity matters more than marketing language.

Group links under clear headings such as Products, Documentation, Resources and Company.

4. Add short descriptions

Explain what each page contains rather than simply listing URLs.

This gives AI systems more context before they access the page.

5. Publish it at /llms.txt

Make the file publicly available at:

yourdomain.com/llms.txt

6. Keep it updated

If your products, URLs or documentation change, update your file.

An outdated llms.txt file can point systems towards information that is no longer accurate.

Should you create llms.txt?

For most established websites, it is worth experimenting with if implementation is easy.

It is not a magic GEO tactic and it does not guarantee that ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or another AI system will cite your website.

What it does offer is a simple way to organise your most important content for AI systems that choose to use it.

The bigger goal remains the same: publish clear, accessible and authoritative information that both people and machines can understand.

llms.txt simply gives AI systems another route to find it.
